Cereal Dominos!

Thank you again for your amazing contributions of cereal to support our first-grade service project! We collected a total of 1,055 boxes of cereal to donate to various food shelters! Special thanks to Mr. Galvis and family for delivering 120 boxes of cereal to support his daughter Mia's class (Mr. Davis 4th Grade)!! We also thank him and the entire PTO for their help in setting up our cereal boxes to implement the cereal dominoes throughout the school. What an amazing activity. Our students loved it!
At the end of the event, our first graders and volunteers helped to collect and deliver the boxes to the trucks that would ultimately take them to the shelters. What an amazing example of teaching our students leadership and community service! Special thanks to our first-grade teachers, Ms. Wodzinski and Ms. Manzo for taking the lead on this project. Also, thank you to Ms. Manzo's father and other family members for helping with our loading and delivery of the cereal.

Howl-O-Ween Service Project

We continue our push to build leaders at Narcoossee Elementary School through our service projects in each grade level. As first grade is finishing up their cereal box collection for the food shelters in our area, second grade will be starting their Howl-O-Ween service project October 1st. We will be collecting new, unopened bags of dog and cat food, unopened treats, and toys for the animals at the Osceola County Animal Shelter for our giveback. We cannot wait to see what we are able to do for the animal shelters in our community!

Academic Corner: Marking the Text

Marking the text is an active reading strategy that asks students to identify information in the text that is relevant to the reading purpose. This strategy has three distinct marks: numbering paragraphs, underlining, and circling. This is called an AVID strategy for teachers to use to engage students in thinking about what they are reading.
How do I use it? Based on the reading purpose, students will use marking the text to identify information as they read. They will begin by numbering the paragraphs they have been asked to read. Then, as they identify information that is relevant to the reading task, they will underline or circle this information, making it easier to locate for notes or discussion.
Even though the reading purpose will determine what students mark, the types of marks should not change. A student’s ability to learn and apply a reading strategy relies heavily on the consistency of the strategy. If marking the text is understood to mean any pen or pencil mark on the paper, the student will never learn how this particular strategy aids his or her comprehension of the text. See some of the examples below. You may reinforce these strategies at home when your child is engaging in text.
