Read-A-Thon This Week

This week is Read-a-thon Week!! NCES PTO is excited to announce its primary fundraiser for the 2025-2026 school year. The exciting part is the school keeps 100% of all donations! The funds raised will support school wide needs and this year 50% of the funds each grade level receives will be dedicated for that grade level to use! How does it work? Families and friends are encouraged to make a pledge and encourage literacy. Students will have one week to collect pledges before a school wide reading event on Friday, September 19th. During their scheduled reading time, students will read or be read to for a total of 60 minutes. A huge thank you to those family members who have already participated!! We are almost halfway to our goal! Juliana's family are top donators thus far and Ms. Strum's class is in the lead!

School News and Updates

This week will be a busy one. We are finishing up all PM1 assessments and we will use this information to make decisions on what supports or enrichment our students will need throughout the year. This week is also Celebrate Freedom Week. During this week, teachers will conduct an oral recitation with students of the following words form the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." There will be other aligned activities for students to celebrate freedom throughout the week.

 

Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars for our second School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting and PTO meeting tomorrow, September 16th, at 7:00am and 7:30am respectively. Also, please be sure to view your child's progress report in the Focus system. Please also remember that we are still collecting boxes of cereal during the month of September for one of our grade level service projects.

Important Reminders

We want to remind all families of the importance of driving slowly and safely while in the school parking lot and car line. This includes being alert with eyes on the road while coming through the parking lot. We want all families to be safe when navigating the parking lot or simply crossing the street at different points of the parking lot. Thank you and have an amazing week!
 

Academic Corner: What is BCU?

You may have heard your student or teachers of your student mention something called "BCU" time. BCU stands for Bear Cub University. This is an amount of scheduled time in the master schedule set aside for academic and/or behavioral intervention, support, and enrichment. This time is in alignment with the Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) which is a framework to provide all students with the best opportunities to succeed in school. MTSS is defined as “the practice of providing high quality instruction and interventions matched to student need, monitoring progress frequently to make decisions about changes in instruction or goals and applying child response data to important educational decisions (Batsche et al, 2005).”
MTSS has three levels, or tiers, of instruction and support, all aimed at giving teachers a streamlined way to provide the best instruction to all students.
  • Tier I (All Students) – provides Quality Core Instruction that consists of scientific research-based programs and frameworks that meet the academic and behavior needs of all students. 
  • Tier II (Some Students) – includes Tier 1 instruction as well as additional more focused supports and targeted interventions for students needing more help. Extra instruction and support often are provided to these children in small groups.
  • Tier III (Few Students) – is for children who need intense support in order to succeed. Extra academic and behavioral instruction and support are provided and adjusted to the student's response to Quality Core Instruction and previous interventions. This tier is often in even smaller groups or one-on-one.
We use the universal student data (from PM1 and other assessment data) to make initial decisions on supports or enrichment for students. Feel free to communicate with your child's teacher about the supports or enrichment your child is receiving during this time.

Starting on Monday September 15th, the Osceola County Schools Cafeterias will begin offering a variety of Smart Snack items for students to purchase during their lunch service.
All Smart Snacks are compliant with all USDA regulations to include:
Low sugar
Whole grains
Reduced fat and sodium
No food dyes or artificial colors
All smart snack options are peanut free!

Options will include:
Chips ($1.00)   Ice cream ($.75-$2.00)   Whole Grain Cookies ($.25)
Rice Krispy Treat (small $.25/large $1.25) Crackers ($.50)
Milk ($.75) Small Juice ($.75) Bottled Water ($1.25)
HS Only Drinks ($1.50/$1.75)
Your student can purchase smart snack items by using money preloaded on their student food service account or by paying with cash. Funds can be added on student accounts by registering your student at www.myschoolbucks.com. Parents can also view their student’s daily transactions and set spending limits on their student’s account by using myschoolbucks!
