Onward to Week #3

Welcome to this week's edition of the Bear Cub Digest Newsletter! I am excited to share the latest happenings and updates from our school community to keep you informed and engaged. We had an amazing second week of school and everyone seems to be easing into the procedures and routines beautifully. We look forward to another great week! Please see some updates, reminders, and snippets of our week below. Thank you and have an amazing week.

School Advisory Council (SAC) & PTO

Thank you to those that attended our first SAC and PTO meetings of the year. We oriented attendees to the purpose and function of SAC and allowed all to read and agree upon the bylaws presented. We will be reviewing our school improvement plan areas of focus at our next meeting.

Our PTO met directly after our SAC and presented excellent plans for school events and school support. Please join efforts to support our teachers and students at NCES through PTO. I want to thank our PTO for their support of our educational goals. PTO voted to purchase a computer-based science software for our 3rd through 5th grade students! We will give more information about this in the next Bear Cub Digest.

Please join us at our next meeting to join these amazing efforts! We will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of every month (SAC at 7:00 a.m. and PTO directly after at 7:30 a.m.). The next meeting is scheduled for September 16th.

A hand with pen writing the word testing.
Remember that testing will be starting this week. See the testing schedule to the right. To support your child during testing, ensure they get enough sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive punctually on test days.
New testing schedule.
We begin the testing week with 5th grade ELA testing. Please see the other planned days for testing. Remind students that no electronic devices are allowed during testing. This includes:
  • AirPods
  • Smartwatches
  • Meta glasses
  • Cell phones

Reminder note.

Upcoming Events

09/01 - LABOR DAY (Holiday)
09/02- Cereal Box Collection begins
09/08 – 09/12: College & Career Week
09/09 - NCES Picture Day
09/12 - Progress Reports
09/26 - No school (SDOC PD day)

***Please note that picture day falls on the second day of College & Career Week. We require students to be in school uniforms for the Fall picture day since these pictures are used for the yearbook and in our FOCUS system. We do want students to participate in College and Career week, so please have students bring their change of clothes if they are participating in the College and Career Week dress up. For example, if students are wearing a camouflage shirt, they will come to school with a uniform shirt and change (or come to school in uniform and change after their picture).

College and career week.

Academic Corner: Interactive Notebooks

You may have questioned why you purchased different colored composition notebooks as part of the supply list for your child this year. Students have been engaged in tasks that require them to write in these composition notebooks or "interactive notebooks" throughout the day. Interactive notebooks are physical or digital tools, typically composition or spiral notebooks, that students use to organize and personalize learning by combining notes with hands-on activities, drawings, foldables, and reflections. They serve as a study guide and a record of a student's year-long learning journey, promoting deeper understanding, student ownership, and a visual representation of their knowledge in a subject. Take some time to ask your child about their notebooks and what they recorded within the week. See some pictures of these notebooks and other learning strategies such as cooperative learning pairs or teacher small groups below.
